Become a part of history as you take part in the ultimate form of backcountry travel. Witness the art of horse packing, first practiced by Genghis Khan and later by Jim Bridger and countless other mountain men as they explored and trapped around the Mountain West.

Over 150,000 acres of pristine forest await you to be explored, with not a single road intruding on its vastness. As the only licensed permanent outfitter camps in the area, you can enjoy this wilderness without the feeling of being crowded.

Gourmet Cowboy meals are prepared in historic Dutch Ovens, or cooked cowboy style over an open fire, and served in our graciously appointed heated cook tents. After dinner, take a hike through our wilderness where you may see Deer, Elk, or Moose as well as beautiful flora throughout the spring and summer. Relax overnight in your private, heated tent or throw your bedroll out under the stars. A hearty cowboy breakfast awaits you in the morning!

We have two camps, Hunter Creek Camp and the Martin Basin Camp, each outfitted with separate sleeping tents for staff and guests. Accommodating two people per tent, all tents are heated with woodstoves and feature carpet, cots, pads, nightstands and sleeping bags. You need only bring your camera! Click here for pricing and additional backcountry adventures.

Hunter Creek Camp

Hunter Creek is the larger of our two camps, and lends itself to extended stays. This camp features accommodations for up to eight guests, and such amenities as a heated shower tent, private latrine tent, and running water at the cook tent and washstand. Hunter Creek Camp is sixteen miles into the backcountry at an elevation of 6,844 feet, right in the center of this vast, roadless area. Travel in is by horse or on foot only.

A stay in Hunter Creek can offer two different experiences:

First, for the more adventurous, advanced mountain rider, this is the perfect "home base" for multiple day excursions into the wild. Ride to the head of "Hole-in-the-Wall" for views of the Gros Ventre, Wyoming, and Wind River mountain ranges from the top of the world. Perhaps you would like to catch up on some history: Ride through the head of Hunter Creek to Cliff Creek pass on the way to Historic Roosevelt Meadows, where Teddy Roosevelt himself once hunted and rode. You might choose to ride south on the Greyback Ridge at elevations approaching 10,000 feet to Pickle Pass, overlooking the Little Greys River, or North, home to the ranch. Whichever route you choose, you will be accompanied by a skilled and knowledgeable guide, and the chances for seeing wildlife are excellent in spring, summer, and fall.

Second, for the fisherman, Hunter Creek offers very good backcountry fishing. You may fish your way in on Willow Creek, trying to outwit the feisty native Cutthroat that make their home here. These fish are native, not stocked, so they offer a challenge for the most experienced fly fisherman and an opportunity to advance the skills of the novice. Catch and release only, please.

You can choose to fish downstream towards the Ranch the next morning, or plan to stay for as many nights as you like- try a day of riding the high country followed by a relaxing day of fishing! Your stay in our camp is just that- Your Stay! We tailor each pack trip for the desires of each group; committed to making your backcountry trip something you will enjoy and remember for years to come.

Martin Basin Camp

Martin Basin is a smaller camp, and closer to home. At an elevation of 8215 feet, this camp sits in the heart of the high country on the western edge of the Greyback Ridge. It offers accommodations for up to six guests, and is more rustic than Hunter Creek, with the same amenities minus the shower tent. Only eight miles from the ranch, an overnight pack trip to Martin Basin Camp is an ideal way to enjoy the backcountry for a night for those wishing a shorter trip on horseback. Leave the Ranch after lunch and enjoy the ride to camp during the afternoon, arriving in camp for dinner and unwinding by the campfire. After breakfast, head down the mountain taking a skyline route as the frost melts off the sage to arrive back at the ranch in time for lunch.
